Computer Back-up and Why It Should Be Your No. 1 Priority

CarboniteHurricanes in the US.

Floods in the UK and Australia.

If you had to evacuate your house in an emergency would you think to take your PCs hard drive with you?

I know I wouldn’t have!

My immediate concern would be too make sure my family and pets were safely in the car and I had packed my important papers and documents, the photo albums, my valuable and grabbed as many CDs as I could.

But, hang on, the photo albums are packed but what about the hundreds of digital photos still on the computer.

And, there are all the financial records for my internet business, all the emails, all the music downloads, all the e-books, all the research and article writing that I never got around to backing up on CDs.

Ouch!  It’s irreplaceable.

Apart from natural disasters there are other dangers to your computer – hard drive crashes, theft, power surges or accidently deleting your own files.

Did you know –

- 43% of people lose irreplaceable files every year

- Only 3 out of 100 stolen laptops are ever recovered

- 13% of hard drives crash in their first year, and

- Thousands of files are lost each year to fires, floods and other disasters.

Sure you can buy an external hard drive and do your own back-up.  Won’t help if you are the victim of theft and the thief takes both your computer and external drive/s.

And if you’re not really into that type of DIY back-up they can be a bit complicated and you have to remember to do it.

I bought an external hard drive but, honestly, I really didn’t know if I was backing up things correctly and I never remembered to use it weekly, monthly or whatever my computer guy suggested.

A friend of mine used to do here own back-up for her business until her computer technician told her she had been backing up her company’s logo for the last two years – true story!

I needed something that I could set and forget, like my computer virus software.

It does its thing at a scheduled time each week and only bothers me if something really needs attention.  The perfect office assistant.

Carbonite online backup was recommended to me and don’t I sleep a lot better at night knowing a little piece of software that even I installed in a matter of minutes without any hitches is merrily backing up new files or changes to existing files as I type.

The initial back-up did take a few hours but that was easily solved by leaving the computer on overnight.

Every file on your PC that has been backed up has a small green disc next to it.  I love seeing those green discs – especially when my hard drive started making the strangest noises the other day.  What was that about 13% of hard drives crash in their first year!

Carbonite was launched in 2006 and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and New York times.  You will also see their logo on the box of Microsoft Money.  They have backed up over 2 billion files and they back up more than 30 million new files every day and have restored over 160 million files that would have been lost forever.

For $49.95 per year for unlimited back-up can you afford to be without Carbonite?

Imagine how you would feel if you woke up tomorrow and everything on your PC was gone.

This article hit right on the target with me! I lost everything on my hard drive due to bad information from a Dell Tech and had to reinstall my entire operating system and software.

I did have everything backed up on my external hard drive. I also use an online backup as well. I recommend both for the reasons desribed above. My external hard drive automatically backs up my files each week and it’s easy to schedule it.

Pros & Cons of my external hard drive vs. online site? My external drive, I am able to back up only one file or many files that I may be working on. Takes a matter of seconds to save it to the external drive. With the online site, I am backing up EVERYTHING and it does take hours to do and it replaces my last backup.

Whichever way you choose to go about this….make backing up your data a priority. You never know when you are going to need it!

I definitely was struck by this article. Computer back up is probably one of the most important and personal sources of technology you will ever use in your life time. The idea of Carbonite was very well-thought out and stands as extremely useful and sufficient to me, and anyone. Bravo!

Got something to say?
